Room-by-Room Placement Guide

Vastu Shastra assigns specific energy qualities to each direction. Matching a room's function to the corresponding energy of its zone is the core principle.

Main Entry / Front Door
North, North-East, or East — Ideal
  • North-facing entry brings prosperity (Kubera direction)
  • East entry brings health and positive energy (sunrise)
  • NE corner entry is considered most auspicious
  • Avoid south-facing main door where possible
  • Door should open inward and fully (no obstruction)
Kitchen
South-East — Fire Zone
  • Cooking platform in SE corner, stove facing East
  • Cook faces East while cooking (recommended)
  • Sink in NE or North of kitchen
  • Refrigerator in SW or West, never NE
  • No kitchen directly above or below puja room
Master Bedroom
South-West — Stability
  • SW is the heaviest zone — ideal for the head of family
  • Bed head pointing South or West for deep sleep
  • Never sleep with head pointing North
  • Attached toilet should be in West or South
  • Avoid mirrors directly facing the bed
Puja / Prayer Room
North-East — Most Sacred
  • NE (Ishanya) is the zone of divine energy
  • Idols face East or West, never South
  • Never place puja room below a staircase or toilet
  • Keep this zone clean, open, and uncluttered
  • Avoid heavy storage or attached toilets in NE
Children's Room
West or North-West
  • West promotes focus and academic discipline
  • Study table facing East or North while studying
  • Avoid placing bed in the SW corner of the room
  • Bookshelf in East or North of the room
  • NW promotes independence and movement
Living / Drawing Room
North or East
  • North and East maximize natural morning light
  • Heavy furniture (sofa set) in West or South of room
  • Avoid heavy decor in NE corner of living room
  • TV in South-East of the room, watch facing East
  • Main entrance from East or North side preferred
Bathrooms & Toilets
West, South, or North-West
  • Never place toilets in NE — considered most inauspicious
  • Toilet seat should face North or South (not East/West)
  • WC in West or NW of bathroom
  • Avoid toilets directly above kitchen or puja room
  • Bathroom window in East or North for ventilation
Staircase
South, West, or South-West
  • Staircase should be in heavier (SW, S, W) zones
  • Steps should climb clockwise (from ground floor up)
  • Avoid staircase in NE — cuts off positive energy corner
  • No staircase in the center of the house (Brahmasthana)
  • Odd number of steps considered auspicious
Underground Water Tank
North-East or North
  • Underground sump in NE is the most auspicious
  • North is also acceptable for underground storage
  • Overhead tank preferred in West or South-West
  • Never place underground sump in SE or SW
  • Water body should never be in SW (instability)

General Vastu Dos & Don'ts

✓ Recommended

  • Keep the North-East corner of the plot light, open, and clean
  • Slope the plot so rain water flows North or East (not South)
  • Have the Brahmasthana (centre of house) open — courtyard or hall
  • Place the main entry in North, East, or NE
  • Face East or North while performing puja
  • Heavy compound wall in South and West; lighter compound wall in North and East
  • Trees and tall plants in South and West, not North or East
  • Keep the NE corner free of clutter, dustbins, and heavy objects
  • Windows on North and East walls for more natural light and breeze
  • Ensure odd number of steps for the main staircase

✗ Avoid

  • Toilet or septic tank in the NE zone
  • Kitchen in the North-East (fire and water clash)
  • Staircase or heavy pillar in the exact center of the house
  • Main door in the South-West
  • Underground water sump in SE or SW
  • Sleeping with head pointing North (conflicts with Earth's magnetic north)
  • Mirror or TV directly opposite the main door
  • Borewell or well in South or SE
  • Plot that is wider in South than North (inauspicious shape)
  • Cutting or having a sharp corner facing the main entry (poison arrow)

Vastu Considerations for Ahmedabad Plots

How does plot shape affect Vastu?
Square or rectangular plots are considered most auspicious (regular Vastu Purusha Mandala applies directly). For irregular plots (triangular, L-shaped, T-shaped), Vastu compliance requires careful cutting of the plan to regularise the usable area. In Ahmedabad's TPS (Town Planning Scheme) layouts, most plots are rectangular, making Vastu compliance straightforward.
What about East-facing vs West-facing plots in Ahmedabad?
East-facing plots are traditionally preferred in Vastu Shastra because the main entry from the East brings sunrise energy into the home. However, in Ahmedabad's summer climate (peak heat from the West in May–June), a West-facing plot with a West-facing entry can result in the main living area getting the harsh afternoon sun. Architects often orient the living spaces toward the East regardless of plot facing direction, so the plot's road-facing direction does not have to dictate internal room placement.
Does Vastu apply to flats and apartments?
Vastu principles apply to flats, but with significant compromises — you cannot change the building's orientation or the building's common infrastructure (staircase, lift, water tank). Within the flat, you can apply Vastu to internal layout (kitchen, bedroom placement), furniture positioning (bed head direction, cooking direction, study desk facing), and item placement (safe, plants, mirrors). The most important flat-level Vastu factor most people can influence is: sleeping direction, cooking facing direction, and furniture arrangement in the living room.
What is the Brahmasthana and why should it be kept open?
Brahmasthana is the central zone of the house — roughly the central 1/9th of the plot area in the traditional 9×9 Vastu Purusha Mandala grid. It is associated with the life force of the house. Keeping it open (as an internal courtyard, a double-height void, or at minimum an uncluttered central hall) allows energy and light to flow through the home. Placing a load-bearing column, staircase, toilet, or heavy storage in the Brahmasthana is considered the most critical Vastu violation.
Can Vastu defects in an existing house be corrected without demolition?
Minor corrections are possible without demolition: repositioning furniture, changing the colour of a wall, adding a Vastu pyramid or yantra, hanging a mirror to deflect energy, or planting specific trees. However, structural defects (toilet in NE, main entry in SW, staircase in center) cannot be meaningfully corrected without structural work. The most practical approach is to plan Vastu compliance from the design stage — SMP raises Vastu considerations during the design phase before drawings are finalised, so corrections are made on paper, not in concrete.
